OCCUPATIONAL HYGIENE & SAFETY


RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary duties of the Occupational Hygiene and Safety Section include the provision of reliable hygiene and safety services to the university community and the development and implementation of health and safety programs to assist department/faculties in fulfilling their legal and moral responsibilities. Pursuant to these duties, the functions of the section are as follows:

  • to advise the university community on health and safety issues;

  • to evaluate potentially hazardous situations involving chemical, physical and ergonomic stressors, as well as matters related to general safety, including but not limited to mechnical and electrical safety;

  • to provide educational programs related to health and safety;

  • to conduct accident investigations;

  • to monitor the operation of and provide technical support to the University's joint health and safety committees;

  • to assist in the formulation and implementation of University policies, guidelines, procedures and codes in the area of health and safety;

  • to monitor and audit the University's compliance with all acts, regulations, policies, codes, procedures and guidelines in the area of health and safety;

  • to provide a liaison with appropriate government regulatory agencies with respect to compliance with existing legislation and with respect to the impact of proposed legislation on the University.
