     WHMIS

This seminar is offered to all employees and graduate students who are exposed or likely to be exposed to hazardous materials. It is designed to provide a 2 hour overview of occupational health and safety at the University and a departmental overview of local health and safety-related matters. The length of this segment is dependent on the departmental policies, procedures, programs, workplace hazards and implementation of WHMIS.

    WHMIS TRAINING-THE TRAINER

This 1 day seminar provides designated departmental trainers with sufficient knowledge to enable them to impart essential information regarding WHMIS to University employees and graduate students in their departments. It includes an overview of health and safety at the University, the WHMIS legislation, as well as the nature of workplace hazards and hazardous materials. Further detailed training about WHMIS-related concerns specific to an employee's or graduate student's work is the responsibility of his/her supervisor.

CHEMICAL SAFETY AND WHMIS FOR SUMMER EMPLOYEES AND STUDENTS

Description:  Chemicals and other hazardous materials are used throughout the University workplace. The WHMIS regulation, made under the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario, requires that all employees or students who work with or around hazardous materials must receive appropriate training so they can use and handle such materials safely. This 2 hour course will provide employees and students with generic information about WHMIS that would allow them to implement WHMIS in their own work areas.

Objectives:
To provide participants with a general working knowledge of chemical safety principles and the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). To ensure that participants are fully aware of their right and need to know about potential hazards associated with hazardous materials in the workplace.

**Note: Further detailed training about WHMIS-related concerns specific to an employee's or graduate student's work is the responsibility of his/her supervisor.

Target Audience:
All summer employees and students are exposed or likely to be exposed to chemicals and other hazardous materials.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Overview of Health and Safety at the University
  • Chemical Hazards in the Workplace
  • Protective Measures
  • Chemical Safety and the Law
  • WHMIS: Labels, MSDSs, and Training

  ORIENTATION FOR JHSC MEMBERS

This 2 hour seminar provides members of joint health and safety committees with information regarding their duties and responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and reviews the organizational relationships for health and safety at the University, as well as health and safety-related policies and programs.

    WORKPLACE INSPECTIONS

This 3 hour seminar provides employees with sufficient knowledge to enable them to effectively conduct workplace inspections and identify hazards with a view of correcting them. The program has a focus on the legal obligations under the OH&S Act of Ontario.

    OFFICE ERGONOMICS

This 2 hour seminar introduces the concept of ergonomics and demonstrates how it can be applied to a computer workstation to reduce discomfort and risk of injury.  Information will be provided on recommended equipment, arrangements and work practices. Case studies provide an opportunity to apply the concepts in typical workplace situations.

    PLEASE NOTE:
This seminar is provided at no charge to UofT staff or departments. But, if staff do not attend and do not withdraw 3 working days prior to the course, their employing department may be charged a fee. Please include cost centre number and note the cancellation procedures.

    UNDERSTANDING NOISE

This 2 hour seminar provides University employees and their supervisors with information regarding the effects of noise and the control of noise hazards. Over-exposure to occupational noise can result in permanent hearing loss and therefore, it is imperative that "noise exposed" employees understand the hazards of noise.

ASBESTOS : EVALUATING & CONTROLLING THE HAZARD

This 1 day seminar provides employees with instruction about the hazards of asbestos and the work procedures to follow when working with asbestos. Over-exposure to asbestos fibres can result in a number of serious and debilitating illnesses; it is therefore, imperative that those involved in asbestos activities are fully aware and adhere to proper work practices and procedures.

SMALL SCALE, SHORT DURATION ASBESTOS ACTIVITIES : A PRACTICAL PROGRAM

This 1 day seminar provides employees, who work with or handle material containing asbestos fibres and project managers and building supervisors who contract others to do work that may involve asbestos activities, with a hands-on approach to instruction in type 1 and type 2 asbestos activities.

    RESPIRATORY PROTECTION

This half day seminar combines audiovisual and practical presentations in the proper selection, use and care of respirators. It is designed for all employees who may be required to don respiratory protection, supervisors, project managers and building supervisors who contract others to do work that may involve the use of respiratory protection.

    RADIATION PROTECTION

This course conducted by the University of Toronto Radiation Protection Authority is an integral part of the compliance with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission requirements. The course is designed for individuals at the University who have not been trained previously in the use of radioactive materials. Professorial staff, research associates, research assistants, postdoctoral fellows, technicians and graduate students without previous experience with radioisotopes are normally required to attend the course and pass the test before starting their experiments.

The Radiation Protection Course consists of two half-days and is offered monthly. The course covers basic radiation physics, definitions and units of radioactivity, principles of radiation protection against external and internal exposures, the risk and assessment of such exposures, the Federal regulations and University of Toronto policies, instrumentation, inventory and contamination control, and emergency response.

Every radiation worker must participate at the refresher training every 3 years. To register please go at: radiation training online training .

If you have questions please contact the Office of Environmental Health & Safety Sandu Sonoc
at 416-978-2028. Persons UNABLE to attend MUST notify the Office of Environmental Health and Safety mailto:ehs.office@utoronto.ca  three days prior to the course.

Radiation Protection Service also offers regular training for users of class 3b or class 4 laser/laser systems within U of T. For more information on laser safety training please see Laser Safety Training.

    BIOSAFETY TRAINING

Principal Investigators are responsible for ensuring that each person under their direction is trained, understands the specific hazards associated with their work, and knows how to protect themselves from such hazards. We offer Biosafety training for all staff and students working with hazardous biological agents and materials in University laboratories.

For more information on Biosafety courses and registration, go to the Biosafety Training page.

    LABORATORY CHEMICAL SAFETY TRAINING

The Laboratory Chemical Safety course is targeted at those individuals working in a lab that has any chemicals beyond those that are used for routine chemical decontamination of biological materials. The course covers the hazards of and precautions for lab activities involving chemical agents such as the following:

  • Incidents that have occurred at the University of Toronto or other institutions and lessons learned.
  • Avoiding explosions, burns or other acute injuries resulting from unwanted or out of control reactions.
  • The routes of entry of harmful materials into the body and the routes of entry for the types of materials commonly found in labs.
  • Carcinogens, teratogens and mutagens.  Review of the types commonly found in labs and control of exposure.
  • Assessing the known and unknown risk of chemicals used in the lab.
  • Chemical storage in the laboratory.
  • Lab safety equipment.
  • Emergency procedures and standard procedures.
  • Note that this training is for individuals working in labs that have the chemicals described above even if the individual does not need to use those chemicals or does not anticipate using them.  Many chemicals pose a hazard even to those who are not directly using them, and the regulations of the Occupational Safety Act require training for those working near chemicals even if they are not working with them.

Prerequisite: the basic online WHMIS course is a prerequisite for this course.

Session Dates: The next sessions of the Laboratory Chemical Safety course are:

    • April 27, 2012 9:30 am - 12:30 pm (St. George)
