for Members of Joint Health and Safety Committees

Course Descriptions and Registration

Part 1: Basic Certification Training
Part 1: Basic Certification On-Site Training - Course Registration
Part 2: Workplace-Specific Hazard Training

The Occupational Health and Safety Act requires that at least one worker and one management member of each joint health and safety committee receive special training and be "certified".  This certification can be obtained through any training program approved by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).

The certification is a two-step process involving both Basic Certification Training and Workplace-Specific hazard training.

For Part 2 training, a minimum of 5 courses are required to complete the certification process, however JHSC members are welcome to take more. The schedule can be found here.

Part 1: Basic Certification Training

This training is generic and applies to all workplaces. It consists of four main components:
  • health and safety law
  • hazard identification and control
  • investigation techniques
  • prevention resources

Basic certification training is provided through Safety Associations and other independent providers who have been approved to do so by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). Although the method of delivery and the training duration may differ between the delivery organizations, the core content of the training is the same.

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) will make arrangements for certification training and pay the registration fee for the two individuals designated to be the certified members by their joint health and safety committee. Please note that only courses arranged through EHS and approved in advance will be paid for by EHS.

Under the collective agreement with the USW the University agrees to pay the cost for basic certification training provided by the Workers Health and Safety Centre for USW 1998 members.  Management and worker committee members are generally free to select their training provider. Training delivery organizations used by the University include the following:
