Health and Safety Online Orientation

The Online Orientation was developed by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) for new employees, existing employees, students and faculty. It is a 30 minute long online presentation with voiceover that gives information about the health and safety system at the University and some of the U of T health and safety procedures, policies and practices. It also provides information about some of the basic rights and responsibilities of employees and other workplace parties under the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario (OHSA), and describes general procedures for reporting of accidents.

Slips, Trips and Falls

Slips, Trips and Falls are one of the most common causes of workplace injuries in Ontario. This online course discusses the hazards that cause Slips, Trips and Falls and how these hazards can be eliminated. Target Audience: All University Employees.

Supervisor Safety Training

The online supervisor safety training program was developed by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety to assist supervisory staff at the University in meeting their obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other legislation. The presentation is roughly 40 minutes long and includes text, photographs and narration. It includes information on: the internal responsibility system, legislation, enforcement, duties around health and safety, due diligence, and incident response amongst other topics.

JHSC Part 2 Certification

Slips, Trips and Falls (JHSC Part 2 Certification)

Hazard Awareness

Asbestos Awareness Online Training

The Asbestos Awareness Online training is an audiovisual presentation that is designed for anyone who works near, but not with asbestos. Any employees, students or faculty who have questions or concerns about asbestos in and around the University can take this course. The course covers topics like the nature of asbestos, uses of asbestos, health effects of asbestos exposure, when asbestos is a hazard, asbestos and the law, and asbestos at the University of Toronto

Taking this course does not allow you to work with asbestos. If you need to work with asbestos, the more intensive multi-part asbestos training is required.

Chemicals - Module 1: Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

The WHMIS online training is a generic WHMIS training session for those who have to work with or near hazardous materials. The course is a basic introduction to the labelling, training and material safety data sheet (MSDS) requirements of the WHMIS legislation. There is also a general treatment of some of the chemical hazards that you might encounter in the workplace.

The course does not cover specific workplace procedures or materials, but rather is intended as a starting point for the workplace specific training that is to be provided by your supervisor. 

Instructions on accessing this course for faculty, staff and students with UTORids.   A printout of your mark on the quiz from the Portal Gradebook qualifies as proof of training. 

Instructions on accessing this course for volunteers without UTORids.  Note that for volunteers without UTORid's, the quiz is not available online. Supervisors will have to obtain a copy of the quiz by contacting ehs.courses@utoronto.ca.

Chemicals - Module 2: Workplace Specific Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) for the Central Steam Plant

The online training is a workplace specific WHMIS training session for those who have to work with or near hazardous materials at the Central Steam Plant.  This course outlines the control measures to safely use specific chemicals and describes how to handle accidental exposures and spills at the central steam plant.  Successful completion of Generic WHMIS training (Module 1) is required before taking this course.

Hydrogen Fluoride Online Safety Training

The Hydrogen Fluoride Online Safety training is an audiovisual presentation that is designed for anyone who works with hydrogen fluoride (HF). Any employees, students or faculty who have to use HF in the course of their work should take this course. The course covers topics like the nature of HF, health effects of exposure, safe use and storage, and emergency procedures.

Laser Safety Online Refresher Training

The Laser Safety Online Refresher training is intended for all authorized users of Class 3B and 4 lasers or laser systems who have previously taken the full Laser Safety course, and is mandatory to be completed every three years. This online session will take approximately one hour to complete. The course is designed to update your knowledge on the risks and health effects associated with lasers and non-beam hazards, including the rules and procedures required to minimize those risks through protective measures. The session is followed by an online quiz which must be submitted to successfully complete the training.

Radiation Safety Online Refresher Training

The Radiation Safety Online Refresher training is intended for all radioisotope authorized users who have previously taken the full Radiation Safety course, and is mandatory to be completed every three years. This online session will take approximately one hour to complete. The course is designed to update your knowledge on the risks and health effects associated with ionizing radiation, including the rules and procedures required to minimize those risks through protective measures. The session is followed by an online quiz which must be submitted to successfully complete the training.

Radiation Sealed Sources Online Training

The Radiation Protection Service offers online training for users of sealed sources only. Any user of open sources must take the radiation protection training course.
